[iron-wine-wikipedia]: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iron_%26_Wine Iron & Wine [Iron & Wine][iron-wine-wikipedia] has great songs, especially if you’re interested in learning on the guitar. Such Great Heights and Jezebel were the first two that I learned. They sound good with simple chord progressions and a very simple finger picking pattern. I’m adding another song from them to by Easy List.
Freedom Hangs One has a driving beat and a swing to the lyrics that makes it slightly difficult to follow. After picking it apart I find that it is really simple.
The notes are limited to three strings and three positions on the fingerboard and the third fret is used for a lot of hammer-on and slides that remind me of “The Amazing Second Fret” from David Hodge’s Tricks of the Trade. Trying to use theory didn’t get me far. I suspect that the song may be a F Melodic Minor (Capo on I to F#) but lets face facts. I have no idea what I’m doing.
Its easy to improvise without much practice and you aren’t stuck with that Where do I go now feeling that learning new songs often give. This Guy has it down.
Getting the lyrics and timing of them down is another story. Scatting is acceptable
