I may have been a bit overly enthusiastic in my UltraMarathon training by running every day this past week. My training is unintentionally cyclical, varying between weeks with miles in the single digits up to 40 mile weeks. This week I renewed my commitment to running and ramped up the number of exercises.
I’m pleased that my body has held up, and I’m probably going to pull back a bit to stave off injury. I’m am going well beyond the suggested increase in weekly mileage, but I’m hoping that I have built up enough of a base so that it isn’t an issue.
The running that I have done has loosely followed my marathon training. I’m not quite sure what ultra training should look like. Running more miles for more time is an easy guess. But, I think running the same number of miles faster might be just as good. Perhaps a mix of the two?
My thought now is to attempt an ultra distance on new years day. I have a sense of urgency to attempt the run before life gets in the way. The winter weather in Orlando makes training much easier and its the best place to run if I attempt an ultra this winter. It would be great to make a New Years Resolution and knock it out on Day 1, though with only a week until then I would only have time to recover from this past week’s effort.
So, am I ready? I could definitely be more prepared. Then again, I tend to over-prepare. And, since I think I could run the distance now, maybe I should just do it and trust that my lifestyle has kept me ready.
