Orlando has the perfect winter weather to be outdoors. Lakes like Baldwin and Eola make good running loops, and the West Orange Trail is an ideal route for a long run or a bike ride.
Today I rode around the city and by the disney area. There were a few bike lanes along the way, but with busy traffic there was a lot of stopping and I spent most of the ride on the sidewalk.
Looking for bike routes yield maps where most of the routes are given the “planned” designation or are “under construction”. Downtown Orlando is a good example where the bike lanes are mostly conceptual…a gleam in some city planner’s eye. Extensive bike paths are planned, covering quite a bit of distance as shown here and here. The city seems to want to be bike friendly, it isn’t there.
Since all the official maps are cluttered with plans for the future, they’re less useful when I take my bike out. I came across BikeOrlando.net who compiled a google map with a good compilation of local trails.
There are local meetups for people who like to get outdoors. The Half Fast Cycling group rides the West Orange Trail on Saturdays. There are runners that hit Eola during the week and Baldwin Park on weekends. Some kayakers and outdoor adventurers are there too. A meetup group unique to the area is the group that meets at Lucky’s lake to swim on Sunday mornings. Its become somewhat famous, and I am looking forward to the swim…once I find a wetsuit!
